And many people might recall that there were a number of slow performance issues reported when Lightroom 6 was released, and it was also a debacle when they temporarily changed the import functionality. I personally got no additional benefit out of Lightroom 6. LR 6 didn't seem to be much more than a bug fix, support of a few new cameras, and HDR and panarama functionality. I can add to that my impression, based on playing with the new DXO version, that it seems to load files exported to it somewhat faster then the previous version, but I have no statistics to back that up.Īnd with regard to your anecdotal example about Adobe and LR, I can imagine that scenario because it happened! The paucity of enhancements between LR 5.7 and LR 6 standalone, for which I paid the $80 or so upgrade price, was very disappointing. The fact that DXO is now supporting the NIK Collection and have initially fixed some bugs and performance issues is a good thing, and a $50 price tag for new users is entirely reasonable.

if you already have an earlier copy of the NIk Collection, free or licensed, that's stable on your computer then hold off until their next release, but there is no need for negativity nor criticism of DXO Labs. If Adobe went out of business and LR became available for free and languished for several years without support until someone picked it up, fixed all the ensuing bugs as operating systems matured, and only charged $50 for it, I wonder whether there would be as many complaints as I've been seeing posted about the NIK Collection. Persinally I would have released a stability version for free to show good will to Nik’s loyal customers and then focus on a release adding new features.Ĭould you imagine the screaming we would get if Adobe decided to release LR with a couple bug fixes and ask for $49 for it. For those who are happy with the stability of what they currently have, it probably makes sense for them to wait until some future version with desirable enhancements.īy the way I too just retired from being a software development manager for the last 35 years, and I do not have any problem with their approach. For those who would like to own the Nik collection and haven't done so before now here's an opportunity to get a stable version at an extremely reasonable price. They now own the software and they're not giving it away and I can't blame them. There is an inherent cost to software development. They could have waited 6 months longer before releasing it until they had meaningful enhancements, but then nobody would have been able to purchase it for the next 6 months unless you were expecting them to give it away for free after they spent several months fixing the bugs they inherited when they bought it.

They're the solution not the problem.īefore they could update it they had to first make it stable. Why in the world would they have to apologize for the pain they've caused when they never caused any pain. By fixing things that were broken because the previous owners never did anything, they've already updated it for some users. They purchased very old unupgraded software with the intention of turning it into something better. This is coming from managing software / hardware products for 35 years.bugs are defects that affect customers and should be fixed for free and include an apology for causing pain to the customer.not standing their with your hands out asking for $49 to fix up their own internal issues.īut they did not cause the bugs.
